Just a short hour and half drive up from Manhattan, lays the bucolic region of the Hudson Valley. Straddling its namesake river, the Hudson, the valley is best known as an artistic haven surrounded by historic farmlands and splendid vistas. A favorite among the weekender and country-home crowd of New York, we’ll cover the region and some of its best spots for your next trip.

The Region

The lower Hudson Valley region starts as you approach Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow on the east bank of the river, and the region reaches north to right before Albany. On either side of the river you’ll find charming hamlets, reminiscent of pre-revolutionary America home to art galleries, boutiques and fine dining, and some of the best small hotels in the northeast region.

Beacon

A sleepy mill-town turned NYC Arts sanctuary, Beacon is one of the most southern of the main Hudson Valley towns. Accessible by Train or an easy 1.5 hour drive north from Manhattan, Beacon is a perfect place to start or end your Hudson Valley escape. Beacon’s Main street is home to many boutiques and fine eateries. Many travel to the town to visit DIA Beacon, which boasts an impressive collection of modern art. Its sister, Storm King Arts Center, is located across the Hudson and is a completely outdoor arts exhibition space.

 

Sights


DIA: Beacon

Dia: Beacon is a must for any contemporary art enthusiast. A former factory turned arts institution, Dia does an incredible job creating spaces to observe the works of artists like Judd, Bourgeoise, and Serra. Many of the galleries are sun drenched and include an element of interaction with the audience. Located at the end of Main Street, Dia is a great point to start or end your visit to Beacon.

Fishkill Falls

Grab a coffee nearby from Trax Espresso and watch as the water cascades in this public park, at the heart of Beacon’s Main street. Don’t expect a deluge like Niagra Falls, although Fishkill Falls does impress in periods shortly after rain.

Main Street

Beacon Main Street is reminiscent of a classic Americana; brick clad buildings and treelined, Main Street could be a set for a Hallmark movie. Several consignment stores, an antiques auction, and a handful of eateries line this street which stretches from Dia Beacon all the way to Fishkill Falls.

Kingston

Once the first capital of New York, Kingston now thrives as a central hub in the Hudson Valley. Its historic legacy is woven into the city's charm, offering visitors a glimpse into the past while serving as a gateway to the diverse experiences of the region.

Stockade District

Or known as Uptown Kingston, is the commercial core of the town. Federalist style buildings sprinkled with Dutch colonial flagstone dot the streets in the Stockade. Up here you’ll find the majority portion of what Kingston has to offer with historical landmarks, shopping, and its food scene. If limited with time, this is the must-see place in Kingston.

Four Corners

To assume that Woodstock is only notable for its namesake 1969 music festival would be a major blunder—the festivities weren’t even held within city limits. In reality, Woodstock is a charming little Catskills oasis where fewer than 6,000 residents prop up an art, religion, music, and theater scene worthy of national attention.

Where to Indulge

Inness

Perhaps the most indulgent locale in the Hudson Valley is Inness, a resort located in the Hamlet of Accord. This scandi-inspired oasis mixes Hudson timelessness and with modern elegance. The ambiance is refined but relaxed, serving modern fare with locally sourced ingredients, like the Endive and Apple salad, and the Trout over Fava beans; Inness excels at providing a sensory feasts for its guests. Service was comparable to great Michelin restaurants, and the interiors looked like they were pulled from the AD 100 list.

Incredibly popular with the New York City crowd, a reservation is absolutely necessary.

Beekman Arms

The Beekman Arms Inn and adjacent Antiques Market is the perfect detour to break up your day in the Hudson Valley. Known to be one of the oldest running Inns in the United States, the Beekman Arms has provided refuge to George Washington, the Continental Army, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Stop in to their tavern and get transported back to colonial America, the place practically oozes of history.

Once you’re satiated head around to the adjacent Antiques market, which is less daunting that the Antiques Warehouse of Hudson. The space, although considerably smaller, packs in a great many finds, including affordable jewelry and cast iron mementos.
