Paris’ Right Bank

Bonjour Les Amis,

This week on The Travel Dispatch, Solferino takes you across the Seine to Paris' Rive Droite, or Right Bank. Here, the saying goes, "La Rive Gauche pense, et la Rive Droite dépense" - the Left Bank thinks, the Right Bank spends.

Steeped in history and commerce, the Right Bank boasts iconic museums like the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay. Stroll down the Champs-Élysées, the quintessential Parisian avenue, or indulge in window shopping on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, a haven for luxury brands. For a moment of tranquility, unwind in the beautiful Jardin du Tuileries. Right Bank experiences offer a touch of Parisian refinement with a livelier pace than its Left Bank counterpart.

Join me as we delve into the essence of the Right Bank and discover how Parisians here embrace the "dépense" (spending) culture. A personal favorite spot is Le Nemours, a charming cafe frequented by French politicians, intellectuals, and anyone seeking a taste of Parisian bourgeois life. Fun fact: in 2021, I even spotted US Vice President Kamala Harris enjoying an apéro (pre-dinner drink) here!

So, get ready to explore the Right Bank's hidden gems, indulge in a touch of Parisian luxury, and perhaps even brush shoulders with the city's elite. Stay tuned for our upcoming features on the Right Bank's must-sees and must-dos!

I can't cover every rue and boulevard in this guide – that's what the Solferino Itinerary & Guidebook is for – I'm thrilled to share some of my personal highlights, including favorite sights, culinary delights, and shopping gems. Be sure to subscribe to The Travel Dispatch for our bi-weekly newsletter, keeping you up to date on all our latest adventures!

Enjoy,

Champs Elysee & the Arc De Triomph

The Right Bank's crown jewel is the Champs-Élysées. This iconic avenue, bustling with tourists and Parisians alike, offers a vibrant mix of luxury shops, cafes, and Parisian flair. Window shop, grab a croissant, and soak up the atmosphere.

At its grand conclusion stands the Arc de Triomphe, a majestic arch dedicated to French soldiers. Take the underground tunnel for a safe passage and capture a photo in the surrounding park. A truly Parisian spectacle!

Musee du Louvre & Jardin du Tuileries

Standing in Place de la Concorde, you'll spot the gilded gates marking the entrance to Paris' "Central Park," the Jardin du Tuileries. Originally part of the Louvre Palace grounds, these gardens are a major landmark and a haven of relaxation for both Parisians and visitors.

Stroll down the main axis, passing several ponds on your way to the Arc du Triomphe du Carrousel, a smaller echo of its grand counterpart at the Champs-Élysées. Look back and admire how Paris aligns in this impressive axis.

As you reach the grand bassin rond (circular pool), prepare to be awestruck by the highlight of today's itinerary: the majestic Palais du Louvre.

Home to the enigmatic Mona Lisa and countless other masterpieces, the Louvre Museum in Paris is a former royal palace transformed into a world-renowned art haven, offering a glimpse into artistic history across millennia.

Notre Dame de Paris

Standing proudly on Île de la Cité, Notre Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris) reigns as a crown jewel of Gothic architecture. A Parisian landmark for over eight centuries, the cathedral's iconic silhouette, instantly recognizable with its flying buttresses and towering spire, has become synonymous with the city itself. Step inside to be greeted by the awe-inspiring beauty of stained glass windows casting colorful light, intricate sculptures depicting religious figures, and a hushed reverence that invites contemplation. Despite the damage sustained in a 2019 fire, Notre Dame remains a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and artistic mastery.

Le Nemours is an iconic Parisian cafe in every sense. Its location directly across the Louvre and adjacent to the Palais Royale, its classic cafe look and fare - all of it is classic, and a must do. The crowd is a little stiff, as well to do politicians and some lowkey celebrities visit, but the cafe welcomes all!

Shopping

Rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré

Considered to be one of the world’s most fashionable streets, Rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré, is home to every major fashion and iconic hotel brand. Fairly anonymous compared to the Champs Elysee, shopping here is a much more pleasant experience. Albeit, the boutiques here are some of the most storied legacy brands of France including Faberge, Chanel, and Hermes. Enjoy the window shopping, and perhaps even a splurge on one of Paris’ most iconic streets.

La Samaritane

The Samaritaine, once a Parisian department store giant, has been reborn! This iconic landmark, located in the heart of the city, boasts a stunning renovation that blends its historic Art Deco facade with a modern twist. Step inside to discover a haven for shopping enthusiasts, with a curated selection of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands. The Samaritaine is more than just a store; it's a destination offering rooftop restaurants with breathtaking views, art installations, and a renewed sense of Parisian elegance.
